Yoga in Albany, Western Australia

07230 May-3 June 2014, I spent a lovely extra long weekend visiting Albany – on the south coast of Western Australia (WA). Albany is a 4hr 40min drive south of Perth, the capital city of WA.

Before visiting Albany, I was pleasantly surprised to find 5+ listings for yoga in Albany on the internet. This number was more than I found this time last year. Great to find additional yoga teachers and venues in SW WA.

It was officially a 3 day weekend in WA, 31 May-2 Jun – and, as I suspected, some of the yoga venues were closed – (I have to remind myself not to be selfish, and that yoga teachers need and want time off too :)) Also, there was a classic “round the houses” car event being held in Albany which meant that some of the streets where yoga studios were located were not easily accessible, and therefore classes were not being held. I did not contact all of the studios found on WWW, however, I did find two studios that were open during the weekend, as follows:

021Albany Yoga Room
90 Frederick Street
Tel: Claire 0448 108 836

Twilight Dreams
14 Argyll St
Tel: Anyes 0428 129672

019As it turned out, I went to only one studio session, ie I attended a self practice at the Albany Yoga Room on Monday 2 June. Six yogis quietly attended to their own practice – it was a lovely experience to share the space, and enjoy the good company.

Jennie (Claire’s colleague) very kindly opened the studio on Saturday and Monday, 7-9am. Coin donation for use of the equipment and studio. Ropes, mats, bolsters, straps, blocks (and other props) were available for students use.

My other yoga sessions that weekend were made on floor of my motel room…

Albany is a lovely spot to visit year round. I have been visiting Albany May/June for the past five years. Winter can be very chilly – next stop south is Antarctica (!) Winter woollies are a must. The weather this weekend was lovely – a little rain, with lots of sunshine, and mild temperatures, for this time of the year.

I took a drive out to Middleton Beach and around the coast to Albany Port. The beach and ocean views are beautiful. En route I stopped at one of the lookout points where I was most fortunate to see a pair of humpback whales, and a trio of humpback whales. The trio were closer to the shore, it was easy to see them spouting, and I could clearly see the undersides of their flippers as they seemingly waved to the crowd of onlookers onshore. To top off this already fabulous experience, a pod of dolphins appeared and swam with the group of three whales.

Look closely at this photo and you can see the flipper of one whale and the hump of another, ie NNE of the motor boat, and West of the sail boat.

There are many walking/cycling tracks in and around Albany, which often provide wonderful views of the countryside and ocean.

Albany has many lovely shops and cafes. I highly recommend The View Restaurant at the Albany Entertainment Centre (AEC). And, if possible also catch a show in the intimate theatre at the AEC.

Albany has a place in the history books as it was the first settlement in WA, and it has a connection to the ANZAC story. Following this link to find out more about Albany’s history.

Many thanks to Claire and Jennie at the Albany Yoga Room for generously opening their door.
